PURPOSE: A refrigerator and a method for controlling the same are provided to rapidly cool a freezing chamber, and prevent excessive increase of the temperature of the freezing chamber after completing defrost, thereby preventing spoilage of food. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a refrigerator having alt least one freezing chamber, an evaporator cooling the freezing chamber, and a defrosting heater of the evaporator, includes the steps of detecting the room temperature of the freezing chamber, and performing defrosting operation by operating the defrosting heater if the detected temperature is below the predetermined defrost starting temperature and stopping defrosting operation if the detected temperature is over the predetermined defrost terminating temperature.
