The invention relates to an internal combustion engine comprising at least one combustion cylinder having at least one control valve system with an electric linear motor (10) as actuator of a valve element, and a stator (18) which is formed by at least two hollow cylindrical laminated cores which coaxially surround each other at a distance from each other and whose sheets are aligned substantially cross-wise to the direction of movement (B) of the rotor (16). The stator comprises blades (22) which are formed by the laminated cores. Between each of two adjacent blades (22) a winding (24) which is parallel to the sheets (20) is situated. The rotor (16) is coupled to the valve element (12) and comprises at least two hollow cylinders which enclose each other coaxially and at a distance from each other and substantially consist of iron sheet. Said hollow cylinders and the hollow cylindrical laminated cores of the stator (18) at least partly enclose and interlock with each other such that an air gap is formed.
