The camshaft is formed from a tube (1) by an internal high pressure forming process, so that all cams (2) are formed integrally with it. A support ring (3) is positively or non-positively fitted to the cams, and bearing elements are located at both ends of the shaft. The support ring has at least one internal radial groove (4), and chamfers on the side facing the tube. The ring consists of a hard abrasion-resistant material, and is hardened befor fastening to the cams.
