PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a device in which error detection is conducted with an optimum level, that is suitable for the utilization objectives of editing video/ audio signals, by conducting a detection with a level in which errors are set during a recording and a reproducing based on a beforehand set error detection level and status information from a recording/reproducing device. SOLUTION: When a recording or a reproducing execution instruction is given to a video tape recorder 4, an error detection level and an error detection range, which are set using a dialogue, are set in a system control section 11 and a control command is sent out to record or to reproduce specified video signals. While executing a recording or a reproducing, a check is conducted, as required, against the generation of errors in a recording or a reproducing based on the status information supplied from the recorder 4 during an abnormal operation, Thus, in an editing system 1, the error detection level and the error detection range for a recording or a reproducing operation of the recorder 4 are freely set in accordance with the utilization objectives of editing video/ audio signals and the operating condition.
