<p>A tissue traction device (10) according to the invention includes an elongated tube (12) defining a vacuum passageway (25), which tube (12) has a proximate end defining a first opening (16), a distal end defining a second opening (22), and a third opening (26) between the ends. A shield (22) covers the distal end of the tube (12), the shield (22) having a plurality of openings (22) providing communication between the vacuum passageway (25), and an exterior surface of the shield (22). Each of the openings (22) having a cross-sectional area smaller than the cross-sectional area of the vacuum passageway (25). The tube (12), and shield (22) are configured for use in surgery. When suction is applied to one of the second (22), and third (26) openings, the level of suction through the first opening (16) can be controlled by varying the extent to which the other of the second (22), and third (26) openings is uncovered, whereby the suction causes the shield (12) to selectively hold tissue against the shield (12). The invention provides an apparatus, a method for gently holding, moving, and exposing soft tissue without clamping.</p> |
