The engine has an ignition plug mounted in the cylinder head (6) essentially centrally in the combustion chamber formed between the underside of the cylinder head and the top of a piston (8), inlet and exhaust valves (22,24) in opposite sides of the head and an injector mounted in the head on one side of the head for injecting fuel in a conical jet on to the piston surface. The difference between the length of the piston stroke and the diameter of the cylinder bore is between about 0 and 4 per cent and the stroke is greater than the diameter if there is a non-zero difference
