PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of improving a contrast characteristic by preventing light made incident from a tilting direction with reference to a reverse distinct vision direction from affecting the display. SOLUTION: As for the projection type display device, the panel attaching reference plane 142 of a panel case 140 is not parallel to the fixing plane 145 with reference to the device main body, but, tilted at a prescribed angle ofθ1, then, a liquid crystal light valve is housed in the panel case 140 so that the end face of the liquid crystal light valve may come into tight contact with the panel attaching reference plane 142, thereafter, the fixing plane 145 of the panel case 140 is pressed against the case attaching reference plane 2100 of the device main body, then, fixed in the aforesaid state, then, the optical axis L of the light made incident on the liquid crystal light valve is tilted by the angle ofθ1 toward six o'clock (toward the distinct vision direction) with reference to the normal direction M of the light incident plane of the liquid crystal light valve.
