<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron emission element which has high efficiency, causes no discharge phenomenon and has high stability over long time. SOLUTION: This electron emission element is provided with an insulating substrate 1, a pair of electrode members formed on the main surface of the substrate 1, and a first and second carbon containing film members 21, 22 arranged oppositely to each other between a pair of the electrode members interlaying a gap 8. The element has such a structure that the first carbon containing film member 21 is electrically connected to one of a pair of the electrode members, the second carbon containing film member 22 is electrically connected to the other of a pair of the electrode members, and the gap 8 between the first and second carbon containing film members 21, 22 includes a position having the maximum gap size of around 5 nm. In this structure, the first and second carbon containing film members 21, 22 may be electrically connected to a pair of the electrode members via a first and second film members formed between a pair of the electrode members, respectively.</p> |
