PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of a high density recording with improved S/N ratios. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium has a substrate and a magnetic recording layer formed on the substrate, and information are recorded by forming recording cells on tracks formed on the magnetic recording layer. The magnetic recording layer has such a structure that magnetic grains 32 are dispersed in a nonmagnetic matrix 31 and regularly arranged to form arranged grain regions 1 on the surface, and the arranged grain region 1 has a width in the track width direction, not less than 1/5 of the width of the track formed on the magnetic recording layer.
