PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize the compound thin-film magnetic head, which can accurately detect the output signal of a magneto-resistance element without being affected by noise and has excellent insulation characteristics between the conductive layer and a shield layer, and the method for manufacturing the magnetic head in high yield by making the conductive layer thick and lowering its resistance. SOLUTION: Recessed parts are formed on the top surfaces of base bodies 21 and 22 and in the recessed parts, a lower shield layer 25, a thick insulating layer 26, a couple of thick conductive layers 27a and 27b for a magneto- resistance element, and a thick insulating layer 28, are formed. Then the magneto-resistance element 30 is formed at base body parts adjacent to the recessed parts while embedded in shield gap layers 29 and 32, and both the ends of the magneto-resistance element are connected to the conductive layers 27a and 27b through a couple of lead-out electrodes 31a and 31b having small film thickness. After the surfaces are made flat, a lower pole 33, a write gap layer 34, thin-film coils 37 and 39, and an upper pole 41 of an induction type thin-film magnetic head, are formed.
