The device has an examination unit (10), with an investigation chamber (14) to receive part of a patient's body, and two bases (30,32) to support patients. A transport device for each of the bases moves each base in turn between positions inside and outside the chamber, so that inside the chamber, the patient body axis is parallel to the chamber axis. Outside the chamber, the transport device moves the patient perpendicularly to the chamber axis, to line the patient with the opening of the chamber.
