The invention relates to an image transmission system for endoscopes and other periscopes, comprising at least one rod lens (2) and at least one other lens system (3). To provide a simple and economically configured image transmission system the invention provides for the at least one rod lens (2) to be embodied as a plano-convex lens whose length corresponds to the radius of curvature of its convex end face. The invention also relates to a method of producing a rod lens for an image transmission system, characterized in that a biconvex cylindrical glass rod is cut from a glass sphere and the glass rod then halved to produce a plano-convex rod lens.
