The invention relates to a manipulator for controlling a container (1) having a round cross-section. Said manipulator comprises a frame, a cantilever (33) which is connected to the frame by force fit and can be rotated about a first axis (31), and a control head (37) which is mounted on the cantilever (33). The frame can be positioned in relation to the container (1) in such a way that the first axis (31) coincides with the container axis (12). The control head (37) can also be pivoted about a second axis (41) which is substantially parallel to the first axis but offset in relation to same and can be coupled to a top end (62) of the container (1). The above manipulator and a method also described in the invention are preferably suitable for controlling a primary collector (1A) of a horizontal steam generator.
