The gas bag (3) is stored in a cavity inside the internal trim of the vehicle and is covered by a cover (7) drawn back as the inflated bag relaxes into the normal driving position of the vehicle by elastic bands (8,9) connected to the cover on opposite ends (10, 11) thereof so that the cover and the elastics bands engage round the bag surface of the inflated gas bag. The cover can have on the side facing the occupant impact-damping properties. The elastic bands can be fixed on a fastening plate (5) provided in the cavity.
