The present invention relates to glass-ceramic materials and, in particular, to glass-ceramic materials for biomedical applications, such as finger joint prostheses. The glass-ceramic material has a fracture toughness greater than or equal to 3.6 MNm<-3/2> and comprises; (a) a major crystalline phase comprising enstatite (MgSiO3) or one or more polymorphs thereof; (b) one or more minor crystalline phases comprising at least one of Mg2SiO4, SiO2, TiO2, MgO, Na4Mg2Si3O10 and/or Na2Mg6F2(Si4O11)2; and (c) a residual glassy phase; which glass-ceramic is obtainable by heating a parent glass composition comprising in the range of from 20 to 60 wt.% MgO, from 35 to 65 wt.% SiO2, from 1 to 20 wt.% TiO2 and from 1 to 15 wt.% Na2O. |
