PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image pickup device in which false colors generated by color interpolation are reduced and to obtain also an image processing method for the image pickup device. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is provided with an image pickup element (CCD) 5, a lens 2 for forming an image on the element 5, an A/D converter 7 for converting an image signal outputted from the element 5 into a digital signal, and a color interpolation circuit 9 for interpolating the colors of the digital signal converted by the A/D converter 7 and preparing image data consisting of a plurality of color planes. The device is also provided with a separation circuit 17 for separating the image data consisting of a plurality of color planes into a luminance signal and a hue signal, an HPF 18 for extracting a high frequency component from the separated luminance signal and a false color suppressing circuit 13 for reducing false colors generated in the circuit 9 by reducing the gain of the hue signal existing in a prescribed color area in accordance with the high frequency component of the luminance signal and the hue signal.
