PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming element which is high, in productivity low in cost and easy in precision management and which functions equally to a GRIN lens array. SOLUTION: Lens arrays 4 and 5 are formed on both sides of the substrate of a rectangular parallelepiped which is formed of a transparent material. The central part of an optical path in a lens pair formed of two facing lenses is formed to be thin so that the inverted image of an object is formed in the part. Specifically, a plurality of recessed hollow parts 6 are arranged between a first lens array and a second lens array arranged so that it faces the first lens array, which lens arrays are formed on both sides of the substrate.
