PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of increasing the brightness of a projected picture by using plural light sources. SOLUTION: This device is provided with plural light emitters 11A and 12A, a light source means 1 consisting of reflection mirror means 11B and 12B arranged while corresponding to the respective light emitters and a luminous flux synthesis means 2 for deflecting and condensing plural almost parallel luminous flux 81 and 82 emitted from the light source means 1 and guiding them to a column-like optical element 3 being the light mixing rod. Then, a surface light emitter whose intensity distribution within a surface is almost uniform is formed by the element 3 at the emitting end surface thereof. Besides, light emitted from the surface light emitter is guided to a light valve by a light transmission means 4 establishing relation between the emitting end surface of the element 3 and the light valve as the conjugate image forming relation so as to uniformly irradiate the light valve.
