PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the irradiation position of an electron beam from being deviated on a target surface by driving each element nearby a spacer divisionally more than once in one frame as to a necessary electric charge discharge amount in one frame and decreasing the current discharged from elements for each time. SOLUTION: Elements are driven conventionally in the order of scanning lines, but the electron discharge amount of the elements is determined by current amount multiplied by pulse width. This invented driving method reduces the current amount of a desired electron emission amount as to the driving of elements nearby the spacer and increases the frequency of driving in one frame instead (B). The frequency of driving is naturally larger than scanning wires other than the elements nearby the spacer. Consequently, electrification on the spacer surface can be suppressed and the trajectory of an electron emitted by an electron source is not disordered, so that excellent display characteristics are obtained. Specially, when a color image is displayed, color slurring can be prevented and a sharp image can be displayed.
