PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain adjustment of a power reference level used by a gain control circuit. SOLUTION: This circuit describes a method and a system for executing gain control, that is designed to maximize the use of a dynamic range of a signal processing circuit, e.g., an A/D converter 206 and to minimize signal clipping, where as the power reference level used for automatic gain control is adjusted periodically. A typical status machine has an analysis state of signal statistic data, such as collection of signal clipping and threshold statistic data, with respect to a time interval corresponding to the proscribed number of samples. The status machine is used as an AGC circuit 308, which can directly control the adjustment of a signal gain.
