The housing (4) of the wing mirror is automatically turned in when by using a distance sensor (5,7,9) it is recognised that the distance between the housing and an obstruction is below a threshold value. The threshold value can be varied in dependence on the vehicle speed. The housing can automatically turn out when the sensor detects the distance has exceeded a boundary value.
