PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a video doorphone system where a video image picked up by a camera not in supervisory operation can be monitored at a low cost without temporarily interrupting the supervision. SOLUTION: The video doorphone system consists of devices 10, 40 with camera that pick up the image of a visitor or the like and of devices 20, 30 with television receiver that receive a video signal sent from the devices 10, 40 with camera and display a video image. The devices 10, 40 with camera and the devices 20, 30 with television receiver have picture compressing and expanding CODECs 222, 313 and 414, the CODECs for the device 10, 40 convert analog moving picture signal into digital still picture data, and the CODECs for the device 20, 30 convert digital still picture data into still picture video signal. In the case of sending a moving picture video signal from the device 10(40) with camera, the CODEC converts the video signal picked up by the other device 40(10) with camera into digital still picture data and transmits the digital still picture data to the devices 20, 30 with television receiver.
