A washing system (10) for high temperature cleaning applications, such as carpet-cleaning, is disclosed that provides a consistent cleaning fluid temperature. The washing system (10) uses multiple heat exchangers (38, 44) and multiple heat paths. The heating and power source is provided by a medium duty, diesel cycle engine (62). Multi-stage heating involves heat transfer from the engine's coolant to the cleaning fluid via an intermediate medium (70). The system also includes a fluid clutch (90) used to engage a power takeoff (88) from the engine (62) to operate the pump (40) and blower (56) of the washing plant (10). A failsafe source cutoff (80) diverts the exhaust flow from the thermal contact with an intermediate heat transfer oil (70) in an exhaust gas heat exchanger (74).
