Novel catalysts useful for chemical synthesis are disclosed. The catalysts preferably comprise a lanthanide immobilized on a solid support, especially a carbon-based support. Also disclosed are methods for making the catalysts, methods for using the catalysts, and combinatorial libraries of compounds which can be prepared with the catalysts. In one embodiment, the new libraries include bisindoles, which can be prepared by reaction of indoles with aldehydes or ketones.
