PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize electron emission characteristics having a rapid response characteristic and high luminance for a long period of time. SOLUTION: This electron emission element is composed of a pair of opposed element electrodes 2, 3 formed on a substrate 1 using alkaline glass, an electron emission part 5 containing carbon as a main constituent, and a conductive thin film 4 including the electron emission part 5. In this case, a high-polymer insulation thin film 6, having a low dielectric constant is formed at least on an interface where the substrate 1 using alkaline glass brought into contact with the electron emission part 5.
