PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a display system which can display characters that an outline font represents on the display device without a CPU capable of high- speed processing. SOLUTION: The display system is equipped with the display device 1 and a computer which generates operation data including character data for placing the display device 1 in operation; and the computer 2 transmits the generated operation data to the display device 1, which stores the transmitted operation data and performs display operation according to the stored operation data. The computer 2 when generating the operation data reads out character data of characters to be displayed on the display device 1 that the outline represents, generates compressed data based upon the read character data, and transmits the generated compressed data. The display device is equipped with a means 5 which stores the transmitted compressed data, an expanding means 9 which expands the stored compressed data, and display means 6 and 7 which displays the characters with the data expanded by the expanding means 9.
