PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a matrix array bistable device of a ferroelectric liquid crystal device, etc., showingτV minimum realizing a high response speed, reduction of power consumption and expansion of an operation area. SOLUTION: A strobe waveform that voltages (Vs, Vs) of a first time slot and a second time slot are the same polarity no zero is used. The voltages (Vs, Vd, -Vd) of the first time slot of the strobe waveform, a selection data waveform and a non-selection data waveform are set so that the voltage (Vs-Vd) of the first time slot of a selection synthetic waveform is lower than the voltage (Vs+Vd) of the first time slot of a non-selection synthetic waveform, and so as to generate switching torque larger than the voltage (Vs+Vd). The switching is performed with the selection data waveform, and the switching is not performed with the non-selection data waveform. Thus, the switching torque suitable in respective time slots is obtained with a data voltage particularly lower than the usually required voltage.
