PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetoresistive element which has a small hysteresis and which is useful for revolution detection, position detection, and the like. SOLUTION: In the characteristics of a magnetoresistive element having four resistive elements using a ferromagnetic thin film formed on an insulating substrate, the magnetoresistive element provides a voltage of 30 mV or higher at a drive voltage of 5 V when a magnetic field of 30 Oe is applied, exhibits a first output voltage when no magnetic field is applied when a magnetic field of 150 Oe or higher is applied in a direction orthogonal to one of the elements from an initial nonmagnetic state and the magnetic field is then removed, and further exhibits a second output voltage when a magnetic field of 150 Oe or higher is applied in a direction orthogonal to the magnetic field and the magnetic field is then removed. The absolute value of the difference between the first and second output voltages is 3 mV or lower.
