Methods of treating and/or preventing osteoarthritis by modulating the amount of fynovial fluid, IL-1 beta levels, the development of osteophytes, the amount of cartilage degeneration, metalloprotease production and acute joint injury through administering an effective amount of an inducible nitric oxide synthase inhibitor are provided.
