<p>A waste treatment apparatus comprises closable cell 126, 128, 130, 132 for processing waste therein to produce biogas, wherein the cell bears at least part of the weight of building 92. Another apparatus comprises a closable cell having a floor, a wall, and a roof which is immovable relative to the floor and wall. A further apparatus comprises a plurality of closable cells (12, Fig. 3), accessway (32, 34, 36, Fig. 3) extending alongside each cell, and means (37, Fig. 3) for monitoring a processing variable from the accessway. A still further apparatus comprises first and second parallel rows of closable cells having a space extending therebetween to accommodate fluid distribution means (46, 48, Fig. 3) which communicate with each cell. Yet another apparatus comprises a plurality of closable cells for producing biogas which is used to generate energy for a building located adjacent the cells. A method is also described, which comprises the steps of processing waste to produce biogas, collecting leachate from the waste, and adding the leachate to the waste at a temperature sufficient to hasten production of biogas. Another method comprises processing waste in a closed cell to produce biogas and introducing a liquid into the cell so as to at least partially submerge the waste, thereby inhibiting the process.</p> |
