Phenols represented by the formula WHEREIN R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent individually a hydrogen atom or a methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl or a like saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group, are selectively methylated in ortho-position by reacting the phenols with methanol in a gas phase at an elevated temperature using as a catalyst (1) (a) cerium oxide or a mixed oxide of rare earth elements composed mainly of cerium oxide; (2) a mixed oxide comprising said (a) in combination with (b) at least one oxide selected from the group consisting of titanium oxide, tin oxide, antimony oxide and bismuth oxide; (3) a mixed oxide comprising said (a) in combination with magnesium oxide; or (4) said (a) and (b) in combination with magnesium oxide.
