PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily prepare an arbitrary pattern of high density and high crystallinity by masking a titanium oxide substrate with an ultraviolet-screening material on its surface and irradiating the substrate with ultraviolet rays and allowing organic molecules to be selectively adsorbed only on the ultraviolet radiation area. SOLUTION: The titanium oxide substrate is masked on its surface with an ultraviolet-screening material, irradiated with ultraviolet rays to form a hydrophilic area of an arbitrary pattern. An organic molecule that is known to be selectively adsorbed to this hydrophilic area is adsorbed on the hydrophilic area to form an organic monomolecular thin film of high density. As this organic molecule, are cited a straight-chain organic molecule bearing covalent bond groups comprising a lower alkoxy silyl group on the chain terminal, a straight-chain organic molecule bearing sulfonic acid group on the chain terminal, or the like.
