PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably produce a hot dip galvanized steel sheet excellent in the uniformity and adhesion of a plating film and a galvannealed steel sheet free from the generation of unevenness in alloying and excellent in powdering resistance as well. SOLUTION: In the process of producing a high strength hot dip galvanized steel sheet in which a high strength steel sheet contg., by weight, >=0.2% Si or moreover contg. >=0.2% Mn is subjected to heating and annealing in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, is thereafter dipped into a hot dip zinc bath contg. Al and is applied with plating, the surface of the steel sheet before annealing is coated with one or >= two kinds selected from Fe, Ni, Co, Sn, Cu and Mn metallic compds. in the range of 1 to 200 mg/m2 expressed in terms of metallic contents.
