PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of enlarging the operating area which is combustible in stratified manner, to the higher load side after preventing the generation of smoke, and further attaining improvement in fuel consumption. SOLUTION: A compression stroke injection mode is set to that it is provided with an operating condition switching means for switching the operating condition of an internal combustion engine between the compression stroke injection mode for stratified combustion and the inlet stroke injection mode for uniform combustion, and a supercharging means for supercharging the internal combustion engine, and it comprises a B area which is supercharged by the supercharging means. Thus, since the amount of oxygen which corresponds to the increase in fuel oil consumption can be ensured by supercharging, an air-fuel mixture with a proper air-fuel ratio is formed around an ignition plug also in the higher load B area, and thus stratified combustion becomes possible.
