PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a solvent gelling agent capable of simplifying preparation and handling, producing firm gel in the presence of a metal ion and useful for treating agents of oil, fixing agents, or the like, of cosmetic, or the like, by including a specific sugar derivative. SOLUTION: This gelling agent comprises a sugar derivative represented by any of formulas I to IV (R1 is an alkyl or phenyl; R2 is p-aminophenyl or 4-pyridyl), e.g. p-aminophenyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-α-D-glucopyranoside, p- aminophenyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-β-D-glucopyranoside, p-aminophenyl-4,6-O- benzylidene-α-D-galactopyranoside or p-aminophenyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-β-D- galactopyranoside. Furthermore, the solvent gelling agent is preferably used together with a metal ion such as silver ion.
