PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a circular knitting machine so designed as not to lead in a pile yarn from a pile loop side already formed by a preceding knitting needle and a sinker in a stitching operation and as to be controllable to lead in the pile yarn only from a yarn feed source, thereby enabling a high-quality pile knitted fabric with uniform pile height, and to provide a method for preventing roving back phenomena. SOLUTION: This circular knitting machine has such a scheme that, a freely turnable roller 7 for pressing a pile yarn 80 is located above the pile yarn guiding shelf 30 of a group of sinkers 4, and between a stitch position P and such a position Q that the point of a knitting needle running ahead rises above a sinker level R, the pile yarn 80 is pressed on the shelf 3 by the roller 7.
