PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a high-strength polyvinyl alcohol-based high-shrinkage stress yarn capable of manifesting a high shrinkage stress when dipped in water and to provide a method for producing the yarn. SOLUTION: This yarn comprises a polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer having >=1,500 degree of polymerization and has >=6 g/d tensile strength, >=10% shrinkage percentage in water and >=0.2 g/d maximum shrinkage stress when dipped in water at 20 deg.C. Furthermore, the yarn is produced by dissolving the polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer having >=1,500 degree of polymerization in an aqueous solvent, adding a cross-linking agent thereto, wet spinning the resultant spinning solution and then drawing the formed yarn at 100-200 deg.C temperature so as to provide >=6 times total draw ratio.
