PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrophilic treating method for an aluminum material for forming a hydrophilic coating film, particularly excellent in hydrophilic properties after press forming on the surface of an aluminum material and to provide a substrate treating agent and a hydrophilic coating material for executing such hydrophilic treatment. SOLUTION: This hydrophilic treating method for the aluminum material contains a substrate treating stage in which the surface of an aluminum material is coated with a substrate treating agent contg. the nitrate compd. of metal selected from aluminum, zirconium, cerium, chromium and iron so as to control the metal coating weight to >=1.0 mM/m2, and then, baking treatment is executed at a prescribed temp. to form a substrate film and a coating stage in which the surface of the substrate film formed by the substrate treating stage is coated with a hydrophilic coating material, and then, baking treatment is executed at a prescribed temp. to form a hydrophilic film.
