PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brominated polystyrene which has a good color tone, excellent thermal stability and a high bromine content. SOLUTION: This brominated polystyrene generates inorganic bromine in an amount of <=300 ppm, when heated at 320 deg.C for 10 min, and preferably has a bromine content of 65-68 wt.%. The brominated polystyrene generating the inorganic bromine in an amount of <=300 ppm is preferably obtained by mixing a solution of polystyrene having a number-average mol.wt. of 10,000-30,000 and a mol.wt. distribution of 1.0-3.0 with bromine or chlorine bromide in the presence of a Lewis' acid to brominate the polystyrene.
