PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a range shifting device for an automatic transmission which can shift a selector valve by a simple control routine by a motor. SOLUTION: This device is equipped with range selector valve operating means 5, 7 which can operate to shift a selector valve 2 between respective shift positions, detent mechanisms 5d, 5e, 5f, 5g, 5h, 9 for retaining the operating means 5, 7 at respective shift positions, a driving motor 12 and power transmission means 10 having a toothless gear 15, and when fluctuation is detected at the shift positions, the driving motor 12 is driven so as to rotatively drive the toothless gear 15 toward the selected shift position. The toothless gear 15 drives the range selector valve operating means 5, 7 only at the time of range shifting so as to operate to shift the selector valve 2, and when operation is finished, the toothless gear 15 cancels connection among the driving motor 12 and the operating means 5, 7. Hereby, the operating means 5, 7 are positioned and retained at the respective shift positions only by action of the detent mechanisms 5d, 5e, 5f, 5g, 5h, 9, and disconnected from the driving motor 12.
