PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound commercially useful as a compound for vitamin A by eliminating and isomerizing a specific starting substance with a specific acid anhydride or its complex. SOLUTION: (A) A compound of formula I (R1 is a 1-23C alkyl, a 2-23C alkenyl containing 1-5 double bonds, a phenyl 1-6C alkyl or the like; R2 is H or COR1) is treated in the presence of (B) dimethylformamide as a solvent and a weak base with (C) a reagent being an acid anhydride or a complex of sulfur trioxide selected from trifluoroacetic anhydride, a 1-6C alkanesulfonic acid anhydride, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid anhydride, benzenesulfonic acid anhydride, phosphorus peroxide, sulfur trioxide and a complex of sulfur trioxide and a tri-1-6C alkylamine, a nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic compound or a di-1-6C alkylformamide to give a retinyl acylate of formula II.
