PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for eliminating a factor causing the lowering of the speed of continuous printing over a plurality of pages which has been the point at issue of the conventional technique, in a conventional image forming apparatus for converting encoded printing data to image data of a page unit by banding processing and successively outputting band data after conversion to an image forming engine to enhance a speed. SOLUTION: Encoded input printing data is once converted to intermediate code bands 1-n of a page unit by banding processing and these bands are converted to real image drawing and the real image data are compressed at every corresponding band to obtain compressed bands 1-n which are, in turn, temporarily stored in a buffer memory and the bands 1-n are outputted to an image forming engine while thawn. The memory region of the compressed bands is cleared and released in output completing order and the released region is made usable as the compression image region of a next page and used in the processing of the next page without waiting the completion of all bands of the previous page to increase a speed.
