PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating optical system by which desired polarized light is obtained by preventing light made incident on a cell other than the specified cell of a PS polarizing converting element on which the light is to be made incident from being transmitted. SOLUTION: A mask 5d is provided at the cell 5b other than the cell 5a of the PS polarizing converting element 5 on which the light is to be made incident, so that the light is prevented from being made incident on the cell other than the cell on which the light is to be made incident. It is eliminated that the light other than desired P-polarized light or S-polarized light is emitted by the PS polarizing converting element 5, so that the light from a light source is emitted by completely converting into the P-polarized light or the S-polarized light and the heat generation of a polarizing plate is prevented. |
