PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately position a cartridge with respect to a cartridge tray even when a error between a designed dimension and an actual dimension is large between a reflecting plate and the cartridge. SOLUTION: This positioning method comprises the steps of: pre-measuring a dimension error between a reflecting plate 6 provided in a magnetic tape drive 2 and a cartridge tray 5; reading a bar code 7 having its information written therein by a bar code reading section provided in a cartridge carrier mechanism; and positioning a cartridge 4 with respect to the cartridge tray 5 after the reflecting plate 6 is read by a reflecting sensor provided in the cartridge carrier mechanism.
