PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an indentation formation mechanism that can be easily downsized in a heightwise direction in a tester, and a downsized hardness tester. SOLUTION: An indentation formation mechanism is used in a tester 1 such as a hardness tester for measuring the material characteristics of a sample(s) by forming indentation on the surface of the sample by a penetrator 3. The indentation formation mechanism is equipped with a body part 2 such as a tester body, an arm 4 such as a load arm that is turnably supported by the body part 2 and mounts the penetrator 3 at a free end part, and an arm turning force application means 6 such as a load arm activation part that turns the free end side of the arm 4, applies force for operating press for forming the indentation on the surface of the sample, and is provided at the body part 2 of the lower part of the arm 4.
