PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a width measuring apparatus wherein the measured value of the width of an object never changes, if its height changes. SOLUTION: A light source 4 having a linear shape is disposed at one side of an object moving in a fixed direction, and a photograph means, i.e., a photographing unit 3 composed of a line sensor 101 and a selfoc lens is disposed at the other side of the object. The photograph means provides an erecting non-magnified image and, if the object has embossed parts, the size of the image never changes and the measurement can be made with a uniform precision. The optical path length can be reduced by using the selfoc lens to downsize the apparatus.
