A submarine plough comprises a plough share for cutting a trench in the sea floor, an inlet for receiving an elongate flexible member such as a cable, and an outlet provided rearwardly of the plough share for inserting the flexible member into the trench. A guide means in the form of a displaceable bell mouth device (130) has a working position in which at least one guide surface is arranged adjacent to the outlet to enable the flexible member from the outlet to pass over the working surface. The or each guide surface has a sufficiently large radius of curvature to minimise damage to the cable (2). A displacement means such as a hydraulic cylinder (136) is provided for displacing the bell mouth device (130) out of its working position.
