摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve contrast by reducing the color irregularities of a projected picture. SOLUTION: This projection type display device is provided with an illuminator 1A to illuminate an optical modulating means modulating light in accordance with picture information. The illuminator 1A is provided with device of a light source 10 emitting the light along the optical axis of the light source, a first lens array 21 having plural small lenses to split the light emitted by the device of the light source 10 into plural partial luminous fluxes, a superimposing means (second lens array 22) to superimpose the plural partial luminous fluxes emitted by the first lens array 21 so as to obtain a nearly uniform light intensity distribution at the optical modulating means and a take-in angle (a difference (A) in angles of light beams made incident on a liquid crystal panel 51) reducing means 80 arranged between the super-imposing means and the optical modulating means. The take-in angle of the light emitted by the superimposing means and made incident on the optical modulating means is reduced by the take-in angle reducing means 80 than in the case that the take-in angle reducing means 80 is not arranged.</p>
