CHARGE EXCHANGE MASS SPECTROMETRY USING DISSOCIATION OF NEUTRAL SPECIES

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify materials of isotopes or the like that could not be identified by the conventional mass spectrometry by using charge exchange mass spectrometry. SOLUTION: Positve ions of an isotope are generated by an ion source, and introduced to a collision chamber filled with an alkali metal target. Dissociated negative ions are generated from the isotope through the collision with alkali metal steam. A mass spectrum of the negative ions is measured by charge exchange, whereby the presence of the isotope is detected. The isotope which could not be detected by the conventional CID method can thus be detected.
