<p>Conventionally, a background eliminating processing of an image is performed entirely on the assumption that there is a background in the image, irrespective of whether or not a background is actually present. Accordingly, if a background is present in an input image and if the gradation of brightness of the background is relatively low, it is impossible to eliminate the background. According to the invention, it is possible to detect the background of an image created by scanning a document by means of a color scanner (40), that is, the substantially white area of the paper of the document according to a predetermined frequency distribution of the image data constituting the image. If such a background is detected, the substantially white area is corrected to a white area, that is, an area of maximum gradation by an image data correcting processing using a correction curve. As a result, the contrast between the background of the image reproduced from the image data and the area of the image other than the background is high, and the noise on including the background such as show through can be eliminated.</p> |
